Just like swimming, it’s not advisable to eat LESS THAN ONE HOUR before shopping the Cleveland Flea. Sure, there’s the risk of gaining a cramp while powerwalking toward the vintage end table that’ll complete your home. But, more importantly, you won’t have room to sample the spread of street eats that fill this month’s food alleys.
Early bird shopper? Cleveland Bagel Co. has got your fix. Be sure to grab one of their signature schmears (like cheddar chive, brie-honey walnut, thyme-black pepper horseradish), too. Manna Food Truck's eggplant frites have a bit of a cult following — and you might be remiss if you don't check just to see if you should join the club. The Proper Pig is BBQ to the max (or, shall we say, Flea-B-Q), including pulled pork to drool for. And we're eager to dig into new bite on the block The Family Jules Meatballs, classic Italian meatballs from a storied family recipe.
One of our favorite parts of street eats is being able to stroll and snack while we people-watch, breathe in the spring day or shop our favorite stands. Sure, you might need to slow down for some of these plates, but it's totally worth it. But there are plenty of treats, especially for your sweet teeth, that won't slow you down
Delightful and vibrant macarons and pate des fruits from Coquette Patisserie are elegant bites you can graze on-the-go. And a perfectly crumbly Russian Tea Cake from new vendor/legendary bakery Lucy's Sweet Surrender is a wonderful morning treat (side of coffee?)... or afternoon. You can also grab a few to take home.
In fact, our foodie friends at the Flea offer a spread that includes fresh, packaged items too. Grab a loaf of challah from Lucy's Sweet Surrender or take home homemade pasta by Team Sawyer. Eat a little, take a little. Just enjoy every bite.
But these highlights are just a drop in the bucket. The April Flea food line-up features close to 40 vendors bringing edible awesome to a stand near you (including at least one for dogs). So, do yourself a favor. Don't be afraid to be a little grumpy with hunger when you get here. This month's market has plenty of bites to make you smile.
